How to Prepare your Kid for His First Camping Trip

So your child is finally old enough to go camping! Congratulations. As a parent, you cannot help but feel happy that your kid is already at this stage in his life when he is old and mature enough to go on a camping vacation. But of course, you also probably have qualms about letting your kid go into the wilderness for some “roughing it.” This is only normal. This is why, it is essential that you are able to prepare both your kid and yourself for his first camping trip. Whether he is going on a summer camp with his friends or to a family camping trip with you, you need to ensure that he is properly prepared for the camping activity. Here are some tips that every parent should know.

  • Don’t force your child – If your child beams with enthusiasm at the idea of going on a camping trip, then good but if not, then let him be. Don’t force him to go to the trip with the family or to enroll in a summer camp just because every kid his age is doing the same thing. Encourage but never force.
  • Involve your child with the planning – Whether it is choosing the summer camp or the family camping trip destination, you need to get your kid’s opinion and ideas so that he would feel that you value what he has to say. This would make him feel mature and responsible. Also, you will be able to have an idea on what your kid really wants. This would help ensure that he will enjoy the camping trip even more.
  • Have your kid help in packing – Aside from the planning stage, you also need your kid’s help during the packing of the camping equipment. This is especially true if he will be going on a summer camp. This way, he will know where his things are located and it will not take him all day long to find a certain item that he needs.
  • Teach your kid to pitch a tent – Setting up camping tents can be difficult especially for children. But if you prepare your kid by teaching him how to do this weeks or days before the actual trip, pitching a tent would be a cinch for him.
  • Don’t be paranoid – Staying positive about your kid’s first camping experience is crucial for your little one. Some parents have the tendency to be paranoid about letting a kid go for the first time but if your kid senses your fear, it is possible that he would also be fearful. As long as you choose the right summer camp or family camping destination, you don’t have much to worry about.
  • Keep him healthy and fit – Camping is a physical activity. Your kid would be doing a lot of walking, hiking, and other physical activities. This is why, he needs to be healthy and fit for the trip. Feed him with nutritious food that will give him the energy he needs to sustain the physical activities during the camping trip. Have him exercise a few times a week by jogging, playing basketball, or swimming to get him in top shape.
  • Do some backyard camping – Backyard camping is a good way to rehearse a camping trip so your kid would know what to expect during his first camping trip. Although it is a far cry from an actual camping vacation, it would give him some idea on what will transpire during the trip.
  • Teach your kid valuable lessons about wilderness survival and the environment – Educate your kid about basic survival skills and safety precautions so that he would know what to do in case something happens during the trip.

Your kid is going on his first camping trip and while you cannot help but feel happy and excited, there is also that part of you that is scared and worried. Do not fret. By preparing him thoroughly for this camping trip, you would not have to worry about a thing.
